Meet the Founder

Scott Southworth, P.E. founded Special Engineering Service in 2018, after working in aerospace and structural engineering for several decades. He first discovered his natural skill for attention to detail as a helicopter mechanic in the U.S Army, where he served for 12 years. He went on to earn his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas - Arlington and performed his graduate work in Civil Engineering (Structural Focus) at Texas A&M - Kingsville.

“For the majority of my engineering career I have been told by peers and clients that I do not come across as a typical engineer. I’ve heard that I do not talk like a typical engineer, that I have an ability to explain complex theories and issues to anyone at any level and relate those ideas to their level. I attribute that skill to my time as a helicopter mechanic in the Army.

I started SES after years of watching other firms approach engineering as a plug and play commodity. To me, engineering is a craft. It’s a craft that requires working at it every day and learning about it everyday. It requires studying how others approach it and how those approaches might help me grow and develop as an engineer. And ultimately, it’s about sharing that craft with others and helping them understand how it helps them.

If you are looking for a firm with a different approach to finding solutions, we look forward to working with you.” - Scott
